When the grind in a mobile RPG actually feels good

July 1, 2026 · Markus Lindqvist

Every mobile RPG has a grind. The difference between a good one and a bad one is whether that grind teaches you anything or just eats your time. The best games make each hour of farming change how you play.

Emberfall Saga is my current favorite example. Its side content hands you gear that reshapes your party options, so repetition leads to new builds rather than bigger numbers on the same build. That is the trick: reward variety, not just volume.

Bad grind looks like the opposite. You repeat an identical fight thirty times for a one percent stat bump, usually with a shop window nudging you toward skipping it. If the fastest way out of the grind is your wallet, the game designed the grind to annoy you.

My rule of thumb when reviewing: if I can explain why a system wants me to play more, it is probably fair. If the only reason is 'to make you play more,' it is probably padding.
